University of Amsterdam
The University of Amsterdam (Dutch: Universiteit van Amsterdam) or the UvA is a public university located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The University of Amsterdam is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being VU University Amsterdam (VU).
Founded in 1632 as the Athenaeum Illustre by the scholars Gerardus Vossius and Caspar Barlaeus, the University of Amsterdam is the third-oldest university in the Netherlands. The UvA is one of Europe's largest research universities with nearly 30,000 students, 2,269 academic members of staff (39% of these positions held by women), 2,360 members of staff in non-academic positions and 1,158 doctoral candidates. It is the largest university in the Netherlands by enrollment. The campus of the UvA is located primarily in the City Centre of Amsterdam.
Teaching and research are conducted at seven faculties: Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Economics and Business, Science, Law, Medicine, and Dentistry. The university offers:
- 57 Bachelor's programmes (3 taught in English), including 1 joint degree with the VU University Amsterdam
- 92 Master's programmes (66 taught in English), including:
- 20 Research Master's programmes (17 taught in English)
- 8 Dual Master's programmes (2 taught in English)
- 23 Teacher training programmes (exclusively taught in Dutch)
- 10 Executive Master's programmes (3 taught in English), including 1 joint degree with Universitet Aarhus Denemarken
Through international collaboration with other universities, the UvA offers exchange options with about 200 universities in Europe and 40 institutions outside of Europe and enrolls over 2,500 international students and researchers.
