General information

This course will help you get started as a writer, or develop as a writer, by enabling you to improve your existing skills and cultivate your imagination. It will guide you through the process of writing, from brainstorming to writing to revising. Creative Writing in English course is led by acclaimed authors also experienced in teaching. In previous years, the course has been taught by Peter Robinson, Philip Gross, Kathy Page, Rory McLean, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Giles Foden, Philip Langeskov, Peter Salmon and Eric Langley.

In the summer of 2019, Margie Orford will conduct an eight day writing and story-telling workshop. This will give the participants the foundational tools needed for writing prose –  fiction (novels and short stories), narrative non-fiction, reportage, memoir, and biography. You will explore the basics needed to conceptualise and outline your project, to create characters with depth and integrity, to write convincing dialogue, to create setting – both time and place. The programme will allow for plenty of time for your own writing, for useful ways of assessing your own material and learning from the work of other participants. In addition you will have guided reading and hands-on teaching so that at the end of the course you will have the outline of a way forward, some written material and a writer’s toolkit that will act as a guide and companion in future writing endeavours.

NB! There is a discount available for students.
